Students Age 13-18 Could Win an iPad Mini Through “Build a Mobile App” Contest

Graduates with a degree in computer science end up with the highest-paying jobs in an industry growing at twice the national average, according to Code.org. Yet, fewer than 2.4% of today’s college graduates receive computer science degrees.

High school students may want to think about their specialty when considering a career choice. And they may want to take advantage of K12’s Build a Mobile App Contest.

From now through January, K12 invites students ages 13 to 18 to create an app that is based on one of the following themes:

• Earth and the Environment
• Space and the Solar System
• Transportation

Participants may choose, for example, to build an app on climate change, the Mars Rover, or vehicular physics. Anything that matches the themes listed above are welcome- be creative! Students are challenged to put on their thinking caps as they apply their technology, business, and 21st-century skills to create something they can be proud of and share with the world!

The three winning app creators will each receive an iPad Mini tablet.

The process to get involved is simple.

• Just sign up for the contest by visiting the Contest Main Page. This page also gives you more information and helpful resources. After you create your account, you will receive a confirmation email with a link for when you are ready to submit your app.
• Build your Android or iOS app.
• Be sure to read the official rules and guidelines for complete details.
• Submit your app to Google Play, iTunes, or Amazon App Store. If you don’t already have one, you may need to create your own developer account. Each store has its own app review and approval process, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time!
• Log in to your contest account (that you created in Step 1) and complete the contest entry form to submit your app for judging.

Remember: submissions must be received no later than 5:00 pm EST on January 31, 2014.
