Google Brings Quantum Physics Concepts to Minecraft with qCraft Mod
Where will the next generation of quantum physicists come from? The experts behind qCraft is betting on Minecraft.
We’ve written before about why Minecraft has amazing potential as a learning tool. Now a team of quantum computer scientists are hoping the game can get kids excited about the field of quantum physics.
Google’s Quantum A.I. Lab, along with MinecraftEDU and Caltech’s Institute for Quantum Information and Matter, recently released qCraft– a free Minecraft mod that brings quantum mechanics principles into the virtual Minecraft world.
While qCraft isn’t a true quantum physics simulation, the mod features analogies that demonstrate, within the Minecraft world, how quantum physics concepts differ from everyday experience. The mod is intended to introduce basic quantum mechanics concepts to kids in a way that’s fun and engaging.
There are so many ways kids can learn with Minecraft, in subjects from writing and history, to programming and math. This exciting new mod takes learning in the virtual world to a whole new level, and will hopefully inspire a new generation to take an interest in studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
qCraft is available as a free download for any Minecraft or Minecraft EDU user. Head over to their site for more information and to download the mod.
