In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, we are sharing stories from parents and students through our What’s Your Story site about kids who were bullied to the extreme and found a better path with K12.

OHVA Student Escapes from Bullies Who Threw Snowballs with RocksToday, we’ll introduce you to Shannon whose daughter experienced bullying before enrolling in Ohio Virtual Academy.

In addition to the bullying, Shannon wasn’t happy with how little she was able to interact with her daughter in a brick-and-mortar school. And K12 solved both of those problems:

I always looked forward to fall with my children, until it was time for my daughter to start Kindergarten. I knew I would miss her, but I had no idea how little interaction I would have with her once she was in public school. I felt like strangers were raising her. Our evenings became a race to complete homework assignments, throw together a quick dinner, have a bath, and go to bed. I felt like we had no time with her anymore, and it just didn’t seem right.

When my daughter started coming home with scrapes and bruises, I started asking questions. It turned out she had a playground bully who was throwing rocks inside of snowballs at my child’s face. My daughter was assaulted repeatedly at ages 5 and 6 by her peers, and nothing was ever done about it aside from the nice words they would say to attempt to appease me. We are now in our third year with K12. My daughter’s self-esteem has returned, and she is a much happier person than she was in traditional public school. We have much more time as a family, and our evenings are spent together relaxing instead of cramming necessities into a tiny timeframe while everyone is stressed.
