Student Success Stories: Raising Awareness of ADHD and Breaking the Stigma

Online learning, sometimes referred to as homeschool, has led to student success for thousands of familiesThis series, Student Success Stories, features highlights from What’s your Story?, a site that’s home to real stories from real students about how their lives have changed because of individualized, online education through K12 programs.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a non-discriminatory disorder affecting people of every age, gender, IQ, and religious and socioeconomic background.  Yet students with ADHD have struggled for years to fit into an educational environment that seems determined to confine their energy.

Society tends to focus on the challenges presented by ADHD. At K12, there is an opportunity to manage play and study, while building on strengths. In order to find fulfillment, it is possible to create an educational setting that works for the student, not the other way around.

Aiden, a third grader who loves to build things and is often described as twenty kids rolled into one, is one of more than 15 million Americans with the deficit disorder recognized by the National Institutes of Health, American Psychiatric Society and the U.S. Department of Education, and other leading medical, psychological and educational organizations.

ADHD was in Aiden’s family’s genetic history prior to his diagnosis. Being the busy, bouncing boy that he is, Aiden struggled to communicate on paper and was not able to sit for thirty students to finish their work. With K12, Aiden is able to do his work verbally, while standing up with one foot in a chair, if necessary. K12 gave Aiden the opportunity to show off his reading and spelling skills, and find a love for history and science.

By turning struggle into success for kids like Aiden, the K12 curriculum and flexible, individualized schooling programs have been highly praised by educators and parents for serving Aiden and other children like him so they can thrive and succeed.
